What types of counseling does Willow Bay Counseling offer?
Willow Bay Counseling offers therapy for individuals, couples, and families in Seminole, Florida. Our services include couples and marriage counseling, anxiety therapy, depression therapy, trauma therapy (EMDR and IFS), family conflict counseling, divorce support, parenting challenges, adolescent issues, and LGBTQ+-affirming therapy. We serve clients throughout the greater Tampa Bay area, including St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
What is the Gottman Method, and do your therapists use it?
The Gottman Method is a research-based approach to couples therapy developed from decades of study on what makes relationships succeed or fail. It focuses on identifying harmful communication patterns — such as criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling — and replacing them with specific skills that build trust, repair conflict, and strengthen connection. Yes, our couples therapists are Gottman Relationship Specialists certified at Level 1 and Level 2, making Willow Bay Counseling one of the most highly credentialed couples therapy practices in the Seminole and Tampa Bay area.
What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based therapy used to help the brain process traumatic memories, anxiety, depression, and deeply held negative beliefs that have not responded to traditional talk therapy. During EMDR, a therapist guides the client through bilateral stimulation — such as eye movements or tapping — while focusing on a distressing memory. This process helps the brain complete the emotional processing it was unable to finish at the time of the original experience. EMDR does not require you to describe the event in detail, and it is effective for PTSD, trauma, anxiety, and depression rooted in past experience.
How is couples counseling different from individual therapy?
Individual therapy focuses on one person's thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and personal history. Couples counseling addresses the relationship itself — the communication patterns, trust dynamics, conflict cycles, and attachment styles that both partners bring into the relationship. At Willow Bay Counseling, couples sessions are structured around identifying what is actually maintaining the problem in the relationship, not just the content of arguments, so that both partners leave with practical skills and a clearer path forward.
What should I expect at my first therapy appointment?
Your first session is primarily a conversation. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your history, your goals, and what you have tried before. There is no pressure to commit to anything beyond that first session. The goal is to help you determine whether Willow Bay feels like the right fit and to give your therapist enough information to begin identifying the right approach for your situation. Most clients leave their first session feeling heard and with a clearer sense of direction.
Do you offer therapy for teens and adolescents?
Yes. Willow Bay Counseling works with adolescents and teenagers experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, low self-esteem, family conflict, social challenges, and identity concerns including LGBTQ+ issues. Our therapists are trained to engage younger clients in ways that feel safe, non-judgmental, and goal-oriented, helping teens build coping skills and emotional resilience during some of the most challenging years of development.
Do you accept insurance?
Willow Bay Counseling is currently accepting clients — please call our office to discuss insurance and payment options. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits, as many plans offer partial reimbursement for licensed mental health counseling services.
How long does therapy typically take?
The length of therapy depends on your goals, the complexity of what you are working through, and how you respond to the approach we use together. Some clients address a specific concern in 8–12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term work, particularly when addressing trauma, deeply ingrained relationship patterns, or ongoing life stressors. Your therapist will discuss a realistic timeframe with you early in the process so you have a clear picture of what to expect.
What is the difference between a counselor, therapist, and psychologist?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but there are clinical distinctions. A licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) or licensed professional counselor (LPC) holds a master's degree and is trained to provide therapy for a wide range of emotional and behavioral concerns. A psychologist typically holds a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and may also conduct psychological testing. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. At Willow Bay Counseling, our therapists are licensed mental health counselors with advanced specialty training in couples therapy, trauma, and evidence-based modalities.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is protected by law under HIPAA and Florida state confidentiality statutes. There are a small number of legally defined exceptions — such as an imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or court-ordered disclosure — but these are narrow and uncommon. Your therapist will review confidentiality in full during your first appointment so you understand exactly how your information is protected.
